Early Childhood

The Kennett Early Learning Center provides a preschool program designed to serve children between the ages of 3 and 5 years. This positive learning environment offers a developmentally-appropriate education in a positive, nurturing, and culturally diverse environment.

The Kennett Early Learning Center staffs five classrooms serving a total of 150 students, which are divided into two half-day programs, a morning program (8 to 11 a.m.) and an afternoon program (12 to 3 p.m.). Each classroom is staffed with an early childhood teacher along with a paraprofessional who promotes communication skills, decision making, literacy development, and problem-solving skills. Its curriculum is primarily developmental in nature and is designed to prepare children for the social and academic challenges they will encounter at the kindergarten level.

The Kennett Early Learning Center also staffs an Early Childhood Special Education class. This program works to meet the unique needs of children with disabilities.

PARENTS AS TEACHERS PROGRAM

Schools, communities, and families all share the common goal of wanting children to succeed in school. Children who do well in the early grades of elementary school are more likely to graduate from high school and go on to be successful in life. Research shows that school readiness predicts later school achievement. Therefore we should provide positive experiences for children starting at birth or earlier, that maximize school readiness. Since education begins at home and parents are their children's first and most influential teachers, supporting and educating parents is a logical strategy. Parents who are involved in their children's early care and education have children who are better prepared for school. The Parents as Teachers program is one key way to ensure that children enter school ready to learn. To receive more information about this FREE program for children birth to age 5, please call 717-1116 or email kcollins@kennett.k12.mo.us.
