H. Byron Masterson Elementary

Masterson Elementary School strives to provide a positive learning environment that is conducive to learning for all children. We have many programs in place to provide extra assistance to those students in need as our goal is success for all children, and our school motto is "On the Road to Success."

Masterson Accelerated Reader Books

READING FIRST:

Masterson K-2 has been a Reading First School since the 2004/2005 school year. This is a federal grant offered to qualifying schools because of low MAP scores. Our district qualified for the grant and was initially awarded funds to purchase reading materials, reading coach salaries, and intense professional development for staff. The grant requires teachers to provide a 90 minute, uninterrupted block of reading each day. An assessment team is set up to test all students on a regular basis as to target any weak areas. Teachers are trained to implement data driven instruction and focus small group instruction on individual needs.

MASTERSON ABC PALS PARENT ORGANIZATION:

Masterson K-2 Elementary has an active parent group which sponsors many activities throughout the year for the students. They sponsor school-wide activities and incentive programs that encourage academic achievement and good behavior. The parent group meets each month in the Masterson cafeteria.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS:

Masterson K-2 offers two after school programs to enhance reading skills. Readers Theater is offered three days per week for an hour each day. Students are provided the opportunity to act out plays and enhance expressive reading skills. They also entertain various audiences throughout the year.
After school tutoring is provided to any student who may need reading support and focuses on areas of weakness on an individual basis. This program is not designed to help with homework, but to reinforce reading skills.

FUNDRAISERS:

Because our children are so small, we do not promote door to door fundraisers. In order to raise money for field trips, “Activity Day”, and other incentives throughout the year, our ABC Pals parent group organizes various activities. One of the biggest fundraisers is our annual Sweets and Treats Auction held in March. Each classroom donates a themed basket or personalized craft to be auctioned. Items are also donated by teachers and parents for the bake sale. This is a fun night for the entire family! Reasonably priced concessions are available and the Easter Bunny is on hand for free pictures for Masterson students.

NHC READING PARTNERSHIP:

Masterson has developed a reading partnership with NHC. Each month students visit NHC and share books with the residents. The students and residents enjoy the afternoon and look forward to returning each month.

ATTENDANCE INCENTIVES:

“Pizza with the Principal” - Each month, the class with the best attendance percentage has pizza with Mrs. McAtee. The students encourage their classmates to have good attendance throughout the year.

“Quarterly Incentives” – Each quarter students who have perfect attendance receive some type of treat and “free time” sponsored by ABC Pals. Incentives range from popsicle & extra recess, movie and popcorn, cookies & story time, etc.

WALL OF FAME:

Our ABC Pals parent organization funds a tile project each year. Every second grade student designs a tile which is permanently displayed in a designated area of our building. Mrs. Caneer, our art teacher, helps each student choose and sketch their design. An out of town business specializing in this type of tile project, comes in, along with plenty of parent volunteers, to work with each student.
